Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will be without Lionel Messi in a Ligue 1 match against Lyon at Parc Olympique Lyonnais. The Argentine midfielder was found with the Covid-19 last week and although he has since recovered, the game against Lyon has come very soon for him.
PSG will also be without the services of Angel Di Maria, Julian Draxler, Danilo Pereira, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Layvin Kurzawa due to Covid-19, with Alexandre Letellier and Neymar Jr injured.
Messi spent the winter break in Argentina and is said to have tested Covid-19 at home. The 34-year-old immediately became sidelined and recovered quickly, as he returned to PSG earlier this week to prepare for the game against Lyon.
Messi was seen working on his own at PSG training, which was the first sign he would not be taking part this week. On Saturday, it was confirmed that former Barcelona midfielder Kylian Mbappe is expected to join the Ligue 1 champions alongside Mauro Icardi.
PSG have enough fire to beat Lyon even without Lionel Messi
PSG are 10 points ahead of Marseille at the top of Ligue 1 and look set to reclaim their home title this season. Messi has scored just once in the league this season but is still a key player for Mauricio Pochettino, who will not be without key players on his way to Lyon.
Speaking Prior to the match, the PSG manager did not comment on Messi but admitted that the game against Lyon was always a difficult one.
“The game against Lyon is always tough. It’s a very good team, a very good player and a very good coach. It’s a winner, between two fighters, and two very good teams. Whether in Lyon or Paris, there are high hopes for this conference.”
“This is a tough match all the time, so we have to be in the game. We are ready to fight. We have hope, we want to play good games and we hope to win. Lyon has one very good team in France. And a good coach. I am sure the team will stay a place of honor at the end of the season. “
